Dickerson Park Zoo

PictureThe Zoo visited us again with some exotic animals and dispelled some common myths we have about animals! The turkey vulture let us know they don’t always circle above carcasses. Rather they are circling in the air currents to keep them high so that they can smell their food up to three miles away!

Agatha, the lizard, doesn’t make a peep. She has no vocal cords. And because she lives in the desert she doesn’t sweat either. Instead she expels salt through her respiratory system and keeps every ounce of moisture she can.

And the rat we saw taught us that rats aren’t always dirty. In fact, they like to be kept clean, however it is often their environment that makes them dirty. The myth of a dirty rat is a strong one because not too many members were keen on petting even this clean rat!
